In other words, if somebody didn't pay for the game, they'll have to work a bit harder to play with mods. As others have said, various mods are available elsewhere. You can also create and distribute your own mods without going through the official mod site. For the mods that aren't available elsewhere, downloading them from the site gives you a zip file you can use in the future.

You can throw mods into that directory without downloading from the official mod site, and you can copy mods out of that directory, even if you installed via the in-game mod installer. And since you mentioned DRM and playing in the future. While the Steam install has Steam DRM, if you register and link with the Factorio web site, you can download the DRM-free version of the game for any supported operating system.

It's not a moral objection. It's a practical one. How do I install mods without creating an account, from outside the portal in the game? Like N'fol said.. If 10 years down the road the servers get taken down, you'll still have the mods, and if the game is still popular, the fans will still find a way to share mods with each other.
